To accomplish our efforts to bring peace and hope in Richmond, we rely on a very special team of local citizens and volunteers. Here are some of our team members and what they do to support Hope in Richmond.
  • Jessi Cates Bristol

    Jessi Cates Bristol

    Secretary, HISA Board of Directors

    Jessi attended the University of Miami, traveled abroad to Kenya, and graduated from Stetson University where she concluded her soccer career and obtained a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in Spanish. Recently, she graduated from the University of Maryland with a Masters of Social Work and a Juris Doctor, and is licensed in each. Jessi’s role as a teaching intern with Grassroot Soccer in Zambia, and her connections to Poolesville, Maryland led to her involvement with Hope in South Africa. Jessi’s expert knowledge of South African culture developed from working and living in Southern Africa many times over the past 9 years, under the auspices of GRS, HISA and a University of Maryland Global Health Grant. Her social work and legal insight is invaluable to the overall management of HISA as Past Vice President and currently as Secretary of the HISA Board of Directors. Jessi currently lives in Washington, DC with her partner, Joe Schoenbauer, and twin sons, Nico and Leo. She owns JCB Legal LLC, serves on the DC Soccer Board and is an active soccer player.

  • Eric Schwers

    Eric Schwers

    HISA Baord Member/Computer Lab Liaison

    Eric Schwers is a small business owner with a passion for entrepreneurship. He has lived in five countries and has traveled the world extensively for both work and pleasure. Despite being the first to admit he has no fashion sense, Eric's most current endeavor is running a men's apparel brand that specializes in underwear, swimwear and activewear. Prior to that, he worked at for a US-based consulting firm in the federal government sector; both in the US and UK. Eric joined the HISA team in 2012 and is responsible for the computer lab in Richmond. He currently lives in the foothills just outside Boulder, CO. When he is not working he spends his time volunteering with up and coming entrepreneurs, hiking throughout the Colorado mountains, DIY projects or just relaxing with friends.

  • Teresa Kraegel

    Teresa Kraegel

    HISA Board Member/Health Programs Liaison

    Teresa lives with her family in Maryland is a founding Board Member of HISA. As one of the initial travelers to Richmond, South Africa, Teresa has concentrated her efforts with HISA’s health programs: HIV/ Aids and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. She has been a registered nurse for 35 years and worked in many different areas of medicine. Her expertise includes cancer, surgery, pediatrics and emergency medicine and Teresa earned an advanced degree to become a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatry/Mental Health. While living in Japan for several years, she ran a large international school clinic. Teresa also had a private counseling practice and worked with persons with HIV/AIDS. Teresa is currently a faculty member of College of Health Professions for Western Governor’s University.

  • Elizabeth McGill

    HISA Board Member/GRS Liaison

    Beth graduated from the University of Nebraska, Omaha with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. She first started with Hope in South Africa in 2008 when her Grassroot Soccer (GRS )intern program assigned her to launch a new project of Grassroot Soccer in Richmond, South Africa. She returned to Richmond to provide mentoring to the Center Manager, Ovetin Ferris, and, since that time, has continued her support of the GRS Richmond program. Beth recently became a member of the Hope in South Africa Board of Directors and is liaison to the GRS program. In that role, Beth assists in the coordination of Coaches' GRS training, World Aids Day Events and expansion of GRS HIV/AIDS education programs throughout the Karoo region of South Africa.

  • Joel Tjornehoj

    Joel Tjornehoj

    President, HISA Board of Directiors

    Joel, as an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Poolesville, Maryland, the founding supporting organization of HISA, became involved with HISA from its inception in 2005. His involvement with HISA’s work includes leadership and oversight of HISA’s programs, budget, and day to day operations. Joel currently serves as the President of Hope in South Africa, Inc. and has traveled regularly to Richmond, South Africa, for the last eight years. Joel is a graduate of the University of Denver and has a master’s degree in International Relations/Economics from the American University. His experience is in education, banking, and non-profit work. Joel is married and has two daughters, all of whom are actively involved in Hope in South Africa.

  • Bridgette Hubbard

    Bridgette Hubbard

    HISA Board Member/Health Programs Liaison

    Bridgette’s background is in research and medicine and worked as a Physician Assistant in Dermatology, Primary Care, and Internal Medicine from 1997 until 2011. As a member of Christ Church in Rockville, Maryland, Bridgette joined the Board of Directors in 2008. She has traveled to Richmond , South Africa three times and most recently in April 2013. Previously, she worked with the Richmond Clinic and the HIV outreach program as well as the children’s library and a variety of other projects. Currently, Bridgette is working as liaison with HISA’s Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Prevention Program, and also compiles quarterly statistics on the Richmond Community Center program activities and attendance. In addition to her commitment to HISA, Bridgette now is enjoying retirement with her husband and cruises and travels on the family boat as much as possible.

  • Mary Nagle

    Mary Nagle

    Vice President

    Mary is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in education. Her career is in workforce development and she has expertise in leadership and program management and is a Certified Facilitator and Trainer. Mary has traveled to South Africa twice and, since 2007, has served on the HISA Board of Directors as Secretary and currently is Vice President and member of the HISA marketing team. As a member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek, Mary has facilitated programs, presentations and marketing to raise funds for HISA. Mary also has used her talents to assist in overall leadership, marketing and guidance for HISA program staff and activities. Mary lives in Mt. Airy, Maryland with her husband Tony and is the proud Mom of five children and nine grandchildren.

  • Danny Severn

    Danny Severn

    Board Member

    Daniel Severn was born and raised in Frederick, MD and is a graduate of York College with a BA in Political Science and earned a MS in Real Estate Business at Johns Hopkins University. He is currently working as a Commercial Real Estate Lender for St. John’s Properties and his hobbies include weight lifting, sports, outdoor activities, and travel. His work connected him with Jonathan Warner, a leader of the Hope in South Africa Project and he has traveled to Richmond twice- January 2012 and January 2014. Danny is active with NAIOP NoVA and Frederick Memorial Hospital Development Committee. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Frederick which has supported HISA projects in the past. Danny now serves as Co-Chair of the HISA Marketing Committee and coordinates speaking engagements to raise awareness of HISA’s efforts.

  • Joel Anderson

    Board Member and Executive Committee

    Joel Anderson is a principal in PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP's Public Sector Practice where he leads a team providing management consulting expertise to government clients. At Indiana University, Joel studied political science, public administration, and African studies, interning during his graduate program with the US Embassy in Brazzaville, Congo. After graduating with his Masters in Public Affairs, Joel moved to Washington DC and began working in international development, first on projects in sub-Saharan Africa and later worldwide. Joel lived briefly in Johannesburg in the mid-1990s and developed a fondness for South Africa while there. Joel has traveled to Richmond twice and has provided his organizational and personnel expertise to guide the HISA management and staff. Joel currently lives in Alexandria VA with his wife, son, and a chocolate Labrador retriever named Sally. In his spare time, Joel enjoys chess, motorcycling, and sports car racing.
